Background
I have been playing this game ever since I found the demo on a PC Gamer
Cover disc. Its so addictive. It was the first dedicated multiplayer FPS
game I can remember, (with Quake III Arena following shortly - I think!).
Its fast, furious and the weapons are the modified versions of the unique
originals found in 'Unreal'.
Speaking
of the predecessor of UT, I remember when I first purchased Unreal from
Tempo (where I would later work for 4.5 years!). I walked 3 miles home
just reading the manual. Then when I finally got home I drooled at the
amazing graphics and game play.
Now Back to UT. Thinking back to BEFORE I played the demo, I remember
anticipating this games release mainly due to the fact that it had the
unique weapons of the Redeemer and of course the Impact Hammer (A weapon
I NEVER use despite the fact I thought it was cool at the time). The thought
of guiding a nuclear warhead around a level just did somthing for me.
Relax tho, I rarely use it online.
Infact, Unreal Tournament was the reason that I first purchased/setup
a home Network. From that point on, I knew I was hooked. I regularly played
my best mate Paul at LAN games, and occasionally a few years later on the
Internet via dialup.
Now I have 2mbs DSL, im back at it and getting back my
former formidable play style.

Tactics
The following tactics can pretty much be applied to any
good First Person Shooter, but one or two are specific to Unreal Tournament.
- The Circle Strafe
Get used to circle strafing as it is proven to be the number 1 most
important skill to aquire when starting out in deathmatch games. The
objective of the circle strafe is the ability to circle your opponent
whilst keeping your crosshair on them and pleting them full of rockets/bullets/sludge
etc.
- Impact Hammer/Rocket Jumping
In
certain UT levels there are objects and powerups that cannot be reached
without the use of a translocator. However, they may also be reachable
via Impact Hammer Jumping or Rocket Jumping (Originally discovered in
Quake I). Expect to take damage from this maneuver. The aim is to charge
your impact hammer whilst running towards the desired object. You then
need to quickly look at the floor and jump. When you reach to peak of
your jump, release the charged air in your impact hammer to send you
sky high, and hopfully directly onto your power up. Timing is the key
factor on this one as releasing the trigger too early will result in
ur body being blasted to smitherines.
- Use Dodging
This is another must technique if you wish to server on a pro server
for more than a second. Randomly dodging is the key to staying alive
when playing more experienced players. Watch them all - they all do
it! Its very hard to aim and dodge at the same time but persevere, you
will eventually get the hang of it!
- Avoid Patterns
Avoid falling into a 'pattern' when moving around a level. ALWAYS be
random and unpredicatble. Never take the same route more than once in
a few minutes of so and dont favour one route to another or your oppoents
will spot your pattern and flatten you every time. A slight contradiction
to this is when respawning and you need to get to a weapon fast. You
should know very respawn point and every weapon on a level and how to
get to each weapon from each respawn sprite so that you can get back
into the action asap. Just watch your back when you are heading for
a weapon as anyone who else who has just been fragged and respawned
in the same vicinity will also be heading for it.
- Dont Be Afraid
If your like me, you get nervous and panicky when you get into a dual
but the key is to relax and keep cool. Panicking will just mess your
aim up. Stay in control. Aim using strafing and little mouse movment
except to compensate for sligh movments and youll be fragging in no
time! Also, if you join a server full of pros and are getting kicked
in the teeth every time u respawn, dont run away! Stay in the game and
perservere. You will benefit and learn from these players and every
time you play them you will get better and better. Its true :)
- Run Towards Them!
I'm serious with this one. Get in their face. Up Close and personal.
Hitting a moving target is hard enough but when their close enough to
see the whites of your eyes its even harder to keep a tail on them.
This method is also handed when going up against someone with a rocket
launcher and your close to deaht. Get in their way and the blast radius
at close range will in most cases take out your killer as well resulting
in a suicide. I.E no frag for your killer as he would of lost the frag
he just scored from killing himself.
- Dont Camp!
Camping, (Staying in the same spot taking people out
with a sniper rifle etc), is one way to really piss people off. Campers
automatically become the prime target in most games as they are cowards
who cant do jack diddly and or squat in a fair 1-1 close fight. Using
a sniper rifle is all well and fine, but not when you hog one place
to yourself where no one can get near you. Become a camper and I will
personally come after you, and believe me, I WILL get you.
